This grand building is the home of the Hon. M Johan MD, a medical doctor of much acclaim, whose principal interest in life, outside the medical profession, is archaeology. For many years he has spent much of his spare time in Egypt and he is a well known figure there. Although he has never made any significant historical discoveries, this has never tempered his enthusiasm for collecting artefacts from around the ancient world. Sadly, over the years, many priceless objects have been removed from their place of origin and found their way into private collections. Dr Johan, whose own home resembles a museum, only ever acquires replicas of the real thing, believing that original items should either remain where they are found, or be put on public display in official museums.
Fixed on the left wall above the entrance archway is a carving of Horus, the god of lower Egypt. Dr Johan acquired this carving some years ago. Horus is often depicted standing in a skiff made from papyrus with a harpoon in one hand and a chain in the other.
