Started by Tommy Bone's grandfather, despite wars and the depression, the business grew. In the early years rumours were rife that he was a bit over-friendly with Miss Winthrope. Some even said that her old nags ended up in the steak and kidney pies instead of the knacker's yard but gosh, those pies tasted good. By the time Tommy's dad took over, nobody cared what was in the pies. The depression was over, but a year into the Second World War rationing was in full swing.
A friendly local butcher made the difference between a bone for flavor or plain cabbage soup. Tommy took over a good all-year-round trade. He was a popular man with a twinkle in his eye as bright as his gleaming blades.
