As most of us know, St Christopher is the patron saint of travellers. In earlier centuries, when few people ventured beyond their own village, those who did were glad of their special saint, who protected them from the hazards of the road.
It's an appropiate name for this sculpture, for David is a great traveller. He also lives on the Pilgrims' Way which those great medieval travellers, the pilgrims, traversed in their thousands on the way to Canterbury.
It was while travelling recently to Scotland that David glimpsed a wonderful church from his speeding train. He decided to try to photograph it from the train on his return journey. This unusual method of photographing a possible subject is not how David normally goes about things. This was, in fact, a first for him. The photographs turned out successfully and formed the basis for this sculpture. It isn't an exact copy of the real church, and David isn't even sure of its exact location, but he says that, for him, it embodies all the aspects of a traditional village church.
