David has created models of many churches over the years and, as David himself says, "it is sometimes quite a challenge to find churches with a difference." Well, David spotted just such a church and found the history of the building quite fascinating.
This particular church is prefabricated from corrugated iron and timber, and was shipped to Crimea during the war there between 1853 and 1856. Many similar structures were taken to the Russian Empire's Black Sea state and, by the time the war ended, most of them had either been destroyed or abandoned. In fact, it is said that only two are still in existence, St Barbara's being one of them. The model that David has made is possibly more elaborate than the real churches were back in the mid-1800s.
The Crimean War, which lasted jusst under two and a half years, was primarily caused by a dispute between Russia and the Ottoman rulers. Britain and France both sided with Trkey and the British fleet was ordered to Constantinople on September 23, 1853.It i estimated that 250,000 men lost their lives on each side of the war.
