Many pilgrims made their way from Winchester to Canteruury along the famous Pilgrims' Way. Along the route they experienced hardship and, indeed, some faced danger. To finance their journey, the pilgrims carried funds and those travelling alone or in small groups were easy prey for robbers. The 'lucky' ones only lost their valuables, but some lost a lot more!
Robber's Retreat depicts a hide-out that could have been used by such villains. The building is located deep within a densly wooded thicket with just one overgrown track leading to it. This secret pathway is protected by hidden traps known only to fhe fiendish occupants, and lethal to anyone pursuing them. The structure itself is like a mini stronghold and well defended.
The wooden bridge that takes us to the hide-out is linked with strong chains. If anyone other than the robber ever got as far as the bridge, they'd be in for a nasty surprise, for the structure can be loosened from the 'Retreat,' thus tipping them into the stagnant moat below!
