The Rector lived a peaceful life and was devoted to the spiritual well-being of his flock. His wife, ever practical, concerned herself with the physical well-being of the villagers. The Rectory kitchen was perpetually fragranced with the scent of a good, hearty mutton broth, which the Rector's children helped dispense to the sick and elderly.
The Rectory was one of the larger buildings in the village and served as home and office to the Rector, an incumbent of the Parish who enjoyed the benefice of the Rectory and the associated tithes. He was a scolar, well schooled in Latin and Greek. As a member of the Clergy, he was respected in the village and he took pride and pleasure in his role as the shepherd of his village flock. His duties were not normally arduous; he performed the usual offices of baptism, marriages and burials. His weekdays were taken with visiting parishioners, the elderly and the sick. He laboured over the preparation of his Sunday sermon, to which most of the villagers attended.
