The continuing story of The Winter Chronicles...a love story
I returned home on two separate occasions during the following two months. Each time, I and my Rose saw each other at every opportunity. However, after I returned to college from one such reunion, I received a letter. It had been hastily written and, as it had been delivered by hand in the middle of the night, I knew it had been delivered in secret. When my eyes took in its content, my heart sank for it was from Rose but did bear not good news. She told me that her father had betrothed her -- his own daughter -- to the son of a rich landowner in return for a plot of land and a house that he could call his own. Do you know what that did to me? Can you imagine how I felt? No, I sure you can't. But what to do about this unexpected predicament, for Rose had ended her letter by pledging her undying love for me!
That instand, I deserted my education and returned home -- much to the surprise of my parents, I hasten to add. I went immediately to Rose's cottage and, leaving my fears behind, banged upon it door. Her father opened it and, when I demanded to speak with Rose, he told me, in no uncertain terms, that she had gone, that she no longer live there, and that she was betrothed to another, so I should leave them alone. I left, indeed, but in a black mood.
Later that day, I remembered an old hermit who lived in a strange place my father called The Mouse House. My father had said of the hermit that he was a man of brilliant powers, that he could look into the future, and that he could turn wood, stone and base metal into gold. Despite his powers, though, the hermit had never benefited personally from them, though he could have become a wealthy man with such ability. Instead, he preferred to help others.
