Of whom else can you say that you could not exist without her, that you can only ever have one of them and that you are what you are because of her? Yes, indeed -- your mother, that unique begetter of you or, at least, the best and worthiest parts of you. From our mothers, we inherit the finer qualities of our personality and the most creditable features of our appearance -- or so tradition will have us believe, but I suspect it is true because daughters long to be like their mothers and sons pander to their lightest requests. In other words, mother brings out the best in us and makes us nobler and more dignified creatures, better than we would be without, made in her mould and so more to mother's liking.
Giving a gift to one's mother should not only be compulsory daily, as I am sure you will all agree, but mean minded children in the dark ages conspired for there to be only one day of the year when mothers got a gift solely because they were mums and for no other reason. This heinous practice has somehow survived through to modern times and, apparently, has never been challenged. Why -- I don't understand; it is a grevious sin to give her a gift only once a year with maybe a little something through the post on her birthday or at Christmas? Confining generousity to the middle Sunday of Lent, which is Mothering Sunday, can no longer be acceptable to the enlightened and big hearted people of today. Let us forget about gifts on Mother's Day only and giver her the treats she justly deserves every day of the year.
