The Caley Lighthouse
There have been Lighthouses guarding the entrances to the Caledonian canal since the early 1800s. I am sure the Caley Lighhouse will inspire many dreams of watching the sunrise over the horizon or even of climbing the moon's magic staircase which leads up from the shore. While gazing from the top maybe the keeper will even spy a glimpse of Nessie! The canal itself has its own lighthouse tales. Lady's Rock Lighhouse is named for the wife of a 16th century Scottish lord; according to the story, he stranded her on the rock when she failed to produce a male heir and assumed she drowned, but she was rescued by a passing fisherman. So all ended well. Sgeir Bhuidhe was the United Kingdom's only pink lighthouse for a while. In 2001 pranksters painted it pink, in fact it and the storage facility next door were painted pink with yellow polka dots. Oh dear, I am afraid the local authorities were not amused and all the ships had to be alerted that the white beacon they expected to see while sailing along the shore now looks more like a lollipop. When the Lighthouse Board replaced the light in the following year, it donated the lantern to the village of Port Appin. With funding from the Scottish Lottery Heritage Fund, volunteers refurbished the lantern, painted it white, and installed it beside the town hall in Port Appin. I think it might have been more fun if they had left it pink! Fort Augustus is the home of the smallest lighthouses in Britain or so they claim. A cylindrical tower, painted white, with a black conical roof. This lighthouse and Bona Narrows are called "pepperpots" as they look so like one. Background
