Lost in the mists of time, the fables have been handed down through generation after generation. The very name conjures up visions of chivalry and magic, romance and adventure and finally a sad betrayal. His castles is built with a large round tower so that The Knights of The Round Table always sit equal to each other. His colours fly from the castle and note his jousting tent is in Guinevere's blue. Somewhere between history and myth came Arthur, born to lead his people to glory and his most famous knight Sir Lancelot was always at his right hand side. Under the guidance of Merlin, Arthur drew the sword of destiny from the stone and won the crown.
Arthur led a band of 28 knights, the legendary Knights of the Round Table. His most famous knight was Lancelot, whose love for the beautiful Guinevere, the wife of King Arthur, is one of the best known Arthurian stories and resulted in the breakup of the round table.
The first mention of Arthur's "Round Table" was in Wace's Roman de Brut. It was said to have seated fifty knights and its shape suggested equality among the knights who sat there. The stories of the Knights of the Round Table reflected the ideals of the chivalric code and the court of King Arthur was the center of order, justice, and civility. When someone, usually a lady, needed help in a desperate situation, they sought the assistance of these knights. Many, if not all of the Arthurian stories start out in just this way. A lady in distress enters the court, Arthur guarantees her assistance, and one or more knights set out to right the wrong against her.
Sir Lancelot as his head knight was expected to cleave to the code most strongly but his love for Guinevere overcame all his training and scruples.
