The owner of our Labyrinth was so inspired by the great Labyrinth of Crete that he decided to build one under his home! You see, as a retired teacher of Classical Studies, he was particularly fond of the Theseus myth...
Famous for its mythological Minotaur, a man-eating creature -- half bull and half man, the Labyrinth of Crete was build by the architect Daedalus for King Minos. Daedalus revealed the secret of the Labyrinth to Ariadne, daughter of Minos, who then aided her lover the Athenian hero Theseus to slay the Minotaur and escape. In anger, Minos imprisoned Daedalus and his son Icarus in the Labyrinth. Undeterred, Daedalus made wings from wax and feathers for himself and Icarus to escape. Daedalus escaped to Sicily. Icarus however flew too close to the sun which melted his wings, and he fell into the sea and drowned.
So skilfully designed was our Labyrinth, that no one could escape from its maze of subterranean passageways and staircases.
