On a Monday in June, Her Majesty the Queen walks through the grounds of Windsor Castle towards St George's Chapel amidst a dazzlingly colourful procession. Ahead of the monarch are twenty-five Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, resplendant in their rich blue cloaks which bear the Garter emblem and the motto, "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Evil unto him who thinks evil). In times gone by they would have been real knights -- warriors to a man -- but today they are revered statesmen and politicians who have done great service to the Crown. Inside St George's Chapel, a service of thanksgiving is held, each Knight sitting in his own stall with his Garter Banner hanging above. What better for a Knight, thought David, than a castle? Like the Order itself, the piece is more symbolic than representative, and is intended to reflect the pomp and ceremony of the occasion rather than the events themselves.
