The continuing story of The Winter Chronicles...a love story
Many years have passed since that dark day and, no doubt, you'll be wondering what happened. Well, Rose and I eventually made it back to shore and rode together on my father's horse -- which I am thankful had rested and refreshed itself -- to the hermit and his funny little house. On the way Rose told me how she had resisted her father's wish that she be married to a man her father refused to name. She also told me that she'd tried to run away with the intention of joining me, for she knew beyond words that she loved me. But she was caught and, in order that she did not attempt to flee again, was taken to the Dark Tower.
Triumphantly, I returned to the hermit with my two trophies. Then, the strangest thing happened. As the hermit, Rose, and I sat around a glowing fire, the hermit raised his hands above his head, clutching the golden key and began to chant. Words that I had not heard before. Overhead, a tremendous storm brewed. Lighting bolted from the heavens and raindrops the side of turnips bombarded the ground. The hermit instructed us to look into the fire and as I did, I saw a vision of the Dark Tower -- with the dark stranger standing on the beach -- struck directly by a monstrous thunderbolt. The structure disappeared behind a smokescreen. After some anxious minutes, the vision cleared and there, before my eyes, was the most beautiful building I had ever seen.
The hermit turned to me. "Take Rose and this golden key and return to the boat beside the lake. Row yourself in the direction of the island that once supported the Dark Tower. The key wlll open its door. The house and the island are my legacy. My gift to you both. But you must remember one thing. If you ever lose the key, you will lose the house, the island, and each other, so take great care of it. Now, both off you, go and live your lives together."
