The continuing story of The Winter Chronicles...a love story
   The house in which we lived was a quite grand affair. Well, house is not perhaps the correct description, for it was more akin to castle than house. As I cast my mind back across the years, I see it emerge from behind limes, oaks and poplars. I see three fortified towers and a grand arched entrance to which me eyes are drawn. A heavy oak portcullis prevents unwanted visitors and intruders from entering. I remember thinking how one of the circular towers always seemed to me as if it rested upon several old, dusty encyclopedias standing on end. As my memory travels yet further back in time, I recall as a very young boy being more than a little frightened of this place. But as I grew up, so I grew to love our home with all my heart.
   Within the cobbled courtyard was a large ornate fountain which my father -- a learned man -- used to call the Font of all Knowledge. He used to tell me that if I splashed the water from within it upon my face and forehead, I would surely gain intelligence and knowledge beyond the reach of others. And, do you know, I did! Yes! When I was young I splashed water from the fountain on to my face each day. Well, I am no vain man and it is not for me to say whether it ever worked but later in my story -- providing you're still with me of course -- you will meet somebody who not only had great powers of mind, but other powers that influenced and shaped me.
