Dickens has given us several memorably unlovable characters in Oliver Twist -- Bumble and Fagin among them. Now, David has brought Mr Fang the magistrate to our attention by sculpting his house. Mr Fang, you will remember, was the dim-witted magistrate who couldn't distinguish between the witness and the accused when Oliver had the misfortune to be brought before him. Befriended by the Artful Dodger, Oliver had fallen into the clutches of Fagin, and was unwittingly initiated into a life of crime, when he was wrongfully apprehended as a pickpocket -- the Artful Dodger and his companion having artfully dodged away.
Oliver, in a state of total bewilderment, found himself before Mr Fang, "a lean, long-backed, stiff-necked, middle-sized man," intent on sentencing him to three months hard labour. Fortunately for Oliver, his good angel, Mr Brownlow and the bookstall keeper, who had observed the real culprits in action, intervened and secured his release. But there were many horrifying hazards to be overcome before Oliver could enjoy the life he deserved with his benefactor.
