Built on a solid stone plate resting upon ancient stone columns, this elaborate fortified building is home to Druids. The Druids emerged from ancient Celtic tribes at a time when people had to live close to nature to survive. By the light of the storyteller's fire, and with the play of a harp, they concocted a magical ritualistic lifestyle for their people. They would gather in the wooded groves, bringing together their mysticism and philosophy, their insight and learning.
In Caesar's Commentaries, we learn that the Druids held a prominent position in the society of the time: "The Druids do not pay taxes with the rest, are excused from military service and exempt from all liabilities." They led their people in resisting the Roman invasions, but their power was weakened by the rebelliousness of the Gaelic Warriors who were envious of their political authority. The superior military strength of the Romans and the subsequent conversion of many followers to Christianity was soon to lead to the disappearance of the Druids; but here, in this secluded area, one fortress remains...
