Custom dictated that when the village squire died, the manor house was taken over by his son and family. The squire's widow and her personal servants were required by tradition to move to a smaller, more compact family residence, called the Dower house.
From that name, the occupant took the title -- still used today -- of Lady Dowager. Her new home was just large enough for her to entertain friends, while at the same time being free of the problems she once had of running a large household.
While still living in the manner to which she had been accustomed, the Lady Dowager could now enjoy a more tranquil life in a house built for her retirement.
