Mr. Delver is a quarry man, but in his spare time, he fancies himself as an amateur builder. The problem is that he's not really any good at it, much to the dismay of his long-suffering wife. When she became pregnant with their fourth child they decided, rather unwisely, to extend their existing house instead of moving to a larger home. This decision, of course, delighted Mr. Delver and he set to work with enthusiasm. His boss at the quarry let him have enough stone to build the extension, free of charge. The first thing that disappeared was his wife's prized vegetable patch. Then things went wrong when a large stone slab fell off Mr. Delver's cart and broke his leg. He wasn't able to work for two months.
When work resumed, he built the walls to the extension without foundation and they fell down. Eventually the walls were rebuilt -- with foundations -- and stayed up for a while. It wasn't long, though, before things started to collapse again, but on a grander scale! Seven years later the extension is still being built...
