With this evocative gate, David has sculpted our symbolic entrance into the new Millennium. He sees the gate as the way into his World Village, with many new cottages and castles to explore and new characters to meet.
   The gate is essentially "old world" in its architecture, as David's fondness for the past is well-known, but with its wide-open entrance, it invites us into a brave new world where hitherto undreamed-of progress in medicine and science holds out possibilities of a richer and more rewarding life than our forebearers ever imagined.
   But the possibilities are dependent on our being able to live at peace with our neighbours in our new World Village. So David has left the space behind that arched entrance tantalisingly empty. How it is filled, he seems to be saying, is in our hands.
