Coming suddenly upon this beautiful little chapel, set deep in the forest, is both a surprise and a delight to the wayfarer. In its tranquil setting, an aura of peace and serenity surrounds the place. It is in constant use and, unlike many of it grander city counterparts, it is never locked, for the many crafts people who live and work in the forest value and respect their little chapel.
They have every reason to do so, for they built it themselves. In days gone by, the forest dwellers had to make a round trip of four miles to the nearest village to attend a place of worship. Then, one day they had a bright idea. Why not build a chapel of their own? And that is exactly what they did, with everyone pitching in, supplying labour and materials. They had no drawings to go by; it was simply designed as it was built and, as David's sculpture proves, it was none the worse for this sponaneity, and the pervading goodwill and harmony ensured a minimum of arguments.
It took six months to complete The Copse Chapel, and the day it was consecrated by the bishop is one that the forest people will remember with pride for a long time.
