Like most newlyweds, money was in short supply, jobs were scarce, and despite their recent marriage the village still gossiped about the past.
Rosie was flighty and a bit of a flirt, but beneath all that she had an extremely sensible mind. She proposed that a new start was the best thing for both of them. "Let's move right away from all this," she said. "But what will we do?" wondered the Friar. Rosie explained that her uncle had access to an almost endless supply of cod as he took care of a lighthouse for the Foley Family. "Cod is so hard to get that this will make us the biggest fish shop for miles if we open a Fish and Chip Shop," replied Rosie cheerfully.
It was hard finding just the right place. It had to be two stories so they could live above it (cheaply) and a large enough shop that people could sit down as well as take away their orders. It was an instant success. Large bundles of newspaper were filled with cod and chips, then a generous shake of vinegar was added, then salt. A tankard for Dad and lemonade for the missus and kids and everyone munched contentedly. Crowded round a roaring fire and swopping news and views, people came from miles around to enjoy a night there.
