The Church and Vestry provided an air of tranquillity and permanence to a village. The largest building, it stood as a landmark for miles around, a symbol of the villagers' faith. The timeless continuity of village life was epitomised within its hallowed walls. The Church presented a microcosm of village life: Births, Marriages and Deaths were all to pass this way and be recorded for prosterity. The Church provided spiritual comfort and formed links with the past and hope for the future. Sunday worship brought everybody together and forged a community spirit amongst the villagers: in this unique setting they met under one roof as equals before their God.
The Vestry was the meeting place of the Parish Council; it provided one of the few rooms in the village large enough to accommodate most of the inhabitants. Church meetings and classes were held regularly in the Vestry, which also provided the venue for a variety of festivals, flower shows and the local Drama Group for which it served as rehearsal room and theatre for the Christmas Nativity play.
