The Christmastime Clockhouse, or Wenceslas manor as it is familiarly called by the villagers, stands proudly above the other Winterville homes. On the roof you will see the tiny prints of a robin who has made his nest up there, undaunted by the regular peal of the Clockhouse bell. Inside you will find Mayor Wenceslas who, on late afternoons at this time of year, is almost certain to be fast asleep in his old leather armchair, snoring softly and dreaming of golden roast turkey, hot mince pies and plum pudding -- with lashings of brandy butter. The Mayor has an appetite to match his bumptious, generous nature: a jolly, fair man, he has been Mayor of Winterville for as long as anybody can remember. Many a villager visits the Clockhouse to lay his problems before the Mayor's hearth and to share a gargantuan afternoon tea, made faithfully at four o'clock by Bessie, the Mayor's devoted housekeeper.
