The Charter Tower has seen better days but came by its name when a Royal Charter was bestowed to a Mr. Orb, the local butcher, by the sovereign to endorse a new recipe he had invented for the sausage known as Black Pudding.
Black Pudding is usually served with a full English breakfast of fried sausages, eggs, bacon, tomatoes, kidneys and toast. Apart from his secret ingredients, the Black Pudding contains boiled pigs blood in lengths of intestine with the addition of cereal and lumps of fat.
Mr. Orb used to eat it every day for breakfast and often as not for lunch and supper as well. It is no wonder he lived to the ripe old age of 23.
