The floors within The Chandlery had known the villager's tread for generations. They came first for candles to light their homes. Only the kindly old candlemaker could remember when the building was filled solely with candles. When he handed over to his sons, he knew they would preserve the traditions of an age-old skill, and so they did, but at the same time, they moved with the times. Oil and paint soon joined the candles on smart new shelves. Groceries too, and all manner of provisions jostled for space, As new products arrived, so new scents drifted through the old timbered building, rising gently to the thatch; the sound of frequent, chattering customers filled the air too.
The old man remembered the 'good old days' and a gentler pace of life, but he was content in the belief that nothing the future would bring could change the essence of his beloved business, and his memories of the years surrounded by wicks and wax.
