A group of friends built the Captain's Cabin for an old herring boat skipper.
When Cap, as he was known, first retired he moved into a neat little cottage with roses round the door and swore he would never miss the sea. However he spoke too soon and within a year had sunk into deep depression. His friends watched him decline and worried for him. The only time his spirits seemed to rise was when he wandered down to the canal and watched a herring boat being raised via Neptune's Staircase.
Sitting over hot toddies in Nessie's Pub one night someone came up with the suggestion that a home by the canal might help. Cap just laughed at them and said "where would I get the money to build by the canal"? That's when the ideas started rolling in and Cap sold his cottage for enough to get a little land on the bank of the canal. The cabin was created out of old boats, bricks left over on building sites and even the odd railway sleeper or two and all Cap's friends worked together to complete it.
Cap and his friends on summer nights sip their half and halfs and watch the boats go by. Smoking his pipe and raising his glass to his friends, Cap thanks them for the contentment they have brought to him.
