Jane, a young, educated but penniless governess has arrived at Barrington Manor house to take up her first position tutoring the son of the Lord of Stourbridge, a widower with an unfortunate reputation for frugality.

The house was once a castle, and has been added to over the centuries, the last parts being added in the 18th century to give some measure of comfort to the Lord and his young family. Despite its imposing front, it suffers from decay and disrepair and its endless corridors are now bricked up and the locked doorways protect its dark secret.

For the wife of the handsome Lord lost her wits and has long been imprisoned in the one remaining Castle tower. Like a living ghost, hertortured presence haunts every room, balcony and stairwell, and in the depths of the night, her moans and screams echo faintly through the air.
