Winter Wonderland
David and Martin (Perry) met over the production of David's Cottages. Their artistic talents made for a good working understanding of each other. That relationship developed further and the first ideas came to fruition in David's Wonderland of Animals.

David has always loved animals and he decided his first new subject sculptures would be the animals he loved. He has worked as always first in wax and has produced 3 main sizes.

David wanted to portray more than just a standard photographic type image and he and Martin discussed how this could be done and came up with a cloak of "familiarity." David took his cloaks a stage further and with inspiration from the work of M.C. Escher produced these interesting animals. The mixing of the finish with the associations of the animals or its food is a totally unique concept. To combine that idea with Escher's highly involved repetitive designs shows how much can be gained by the exploring and sharing of ideas.

He has loved doing these and also found that he returns to carving cottages with new delight after working on the animals.

Naming must have been fun, Pericles for that wise owl and Lily for the duck and our timid little field mouse Harvey but curious why Humphrey for the badger. (Anyone have any ideas)? Some, of course, had their names made with their coat. Rosie's coat of Roses and Carrot Tops just fell into their names.
